ANC rejects DA's divisive plan

The ANC says the DA drives a party political campaign and a secessionist strategy to project the Cape as an "independent republic" by offering honorary citizenship to the United States first couple Barack and Michelle Obama.

ANC Western Cape secretary Songezo Mjongile says: "This is another ploy to paint the DA black, while it still has an untransformed core. One look at Patricia de Lille's mayoral committee in Cape Town confirms the real state of the DA, namely that it still is a party reflecting a majority of white members and advancing their interests. This is also visible in the Western Cape provincial government and everywhere the DA rules! This opportunism of the DA ran city is an election ploy by the DA to make believe it cares about blacks as part of papering over its members collaboration with apartheid government.

"The DA is opportunistic in its bid to also add the Obama's as Freemen of the city and is a diversion from real issues facing the city like the failure to provide service to the poor majority and address apartheid inequalities. This is inconsistent with the values of president Obama and his wife who have worked tirelessly for the upliftment of the poor and disadvantaged Americans. We won't be fooled but will be steadfast in ensuring the real issues of the city are dealt with.

"The national government presents decorations and orders to incoming heads of state visiting the Republic on behalf of all South Africans. There is no need for a sectarian addition that aims to upstage the national government. The plan of the DA is not supported by a vast number of residents, which means this is a divisive action by the DA that is not in touch with the people.

"The ANC therefore respectfully calls on the Obamas and the United States of America to not accept the DA's Cape Town bid. The ANC believes this will not strain international relations or cooperation between our countries, but will in fact strengthen it as we continue to work for a better world order and life for the poor."
