MINISTER NDEBELE WELCOMES MURDER FINDING IN BLACKHEATH ROAD CRASH

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has welcomed the finding by the Western Cape High Court earlier today (12 December) that taxi driver Jacob Humphreys was guilty of murdering 10 school pupils who died after his minibus was hit by a train at a level crossing at Blackheath outside Cape Town last year.

"We welcome the finding by Western Cape High Court Judge Robert Henney that Jacob Humphreys was guilty on 10 charges of murder and four of attempted murder, after his minibus was hit by a train at a level crossing at Blackheath outside Cape Town last year.

"Our society has degenerated to a level where some drivers continue to display a blatant disregard for human life. In conjunction with the Ministries of Police and Justice, as well as the National Prosecuting Authority, we will continue to ensure that we are more aggressive in dealing with irresponsible drivers to protect our constitutionally entrenched right to life. To this end, in those instances where it can be proved that a motorist's conduct is such that it can be inferred that he had some form of intention to cause the death of the deceased, that motorist will be charged with murder.

"Law enforcement officers are out in full force to ensure safe roads, particularly during the December holidays. No mercy will be shown to any person who disobeys road rules. We call upon all road users to be part of obeying road rules. Before embarking on a trip, test yourself, test your vehicle and act responsibly on the roads. Road safety is everybody's responsibility. Road traffic offences must be reported to 0861 400 800," said the Minister.
