ANC welcomes Sekunjalo winning bid for Independent News

Hope for new era of editorial objectivity

Cape Town, 19th February 2013:

We welcome the Sekunjalo winning bid for Independent Newspapers. We hope that this will usher in a new era in editorial objectivity and enhance Independent's stature as a serious player in fostering public dialogue, developing social cohesion and contribute towards building a national democratic society.

Independent News is one of South Africa's premier media houses and has a long and proud history that combined with the outstanding track-record of Sekunjalo Investments bodes well for the development of the media sector and positions it for exciting expansion prospects.

We are encouraged by the fact that Independent News will now be under new leadership that will reposition Independent News to explore new markets as well as innovative and emerging media channels and platforms.

In winning the bid for Independent News the Sekunjalo Group have also silenced their detractors that generated negative publicity last year when the Sekunjalo bid was initially announced. We have no doubt that this will be a winning combination that will take Independent News to new heights and usher in a new era in the life of the group taking it to greater profitability and extending its reach to new audiences.

We extend our warmest congratulations to the Sekunjalo Group and wish all at Independent News joy and success under their new umbrella and trust that they will all grow from strength to strength.
