DA continues to grow - Helen Zille

By-election results show that ANC is haemorrhaging support

"Victories show that the DA continues to grow across South Africa"

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has recorded emphatic victories in by-elections in Atlantis (Cape Town), Riebeek West (Swartland), Midvaal and Bronkhorstspruit (Kungwini). The DA continues to grow across South Africa, winning seats previously held by the ANC and increasing our support levels in all communities (see results).

The result in Atlantis (Cape Town), where the DA captured the seat previously held by the ANC, is particularly significant. The DA polled 45.5% (up from 25.5% in 2006), while the ANC polled 31.5% (down from 52.1% in 2006).

In Riebeek West (Swartland), the DA won 60.39% of the vote (an increase from 55.1% in 2006). The ANC received 39.61% of the vote.

Even in seats that the ANC has retained, the DA has shown strong growth. In ward 18, Steve Tshwete Municipality, Mpumalanga, the DA won 38.7% of the vote, up from 10.63% in 2006.

The victories in Atlantis and Midvaal are endorsements of the DA's performance in government. The ANC continues to haemorrhage support.

Last night's results confirm that the DA is the only serious alternative to the ANC. Statement issued by Helen Zille, leader of the Democratic Alliance, November 19 2009
