Douglasdale video: Whole story still untold – FF Plus

Party says it has information indicating that the JMPD officers did act unlawfully

JMPD: Whole story behind controversial Douglasdale video still untold

31 July 2019

The FF Plus is not surprised by the decision of the Johannesburg Metro Police (JMPD) not to prosecute the Metro Police officer who used force to subdue a woman at the Douglasdale police station while a nurse tried to take a sample of blood.

Information at the FF Plus's disposal, of which more detail cannot be disclosed at this time, indicates that the officers did indeed act unlawfully even before the blood sample was taken as well as while the blood sample was being taken.

Thus, the FF Plus is of the opinion that the JMPD acted outside of its mandate as prescribed by the law and the party will refer the case to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for further investigation.

The party spoke to the victim and eyewitnesses after the incident and offered them support. Additional information regarding the case was received and the FF Plus plans to lodge criminal complaints against the Metro Police officers.

The investigation by the FF Plus will be expanded to include the medical staff member in the video and a complaint may possibly be lodged with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

It is lamentable that the Johannesburg Metro Council and the Mayoral Committee member for Community Safety, Michael Sun, did not make use of the opportunity to thoroughly investigate the matter and protect the rights of the victim.

The FF Plus will not allow Metro Police officers to abuse their positions of authority to intimidate and victimise the public.
