Independent inquiry needed into Lonmin massacre - Zille

DA leader sends condolences to friends and family of all those who died this week

Lonmin tragedy: Full independent investigation of massacre required

The Democratic Alliance is shocked and appalled by reports that up to 17 striking Lonmin workers have been shot and killed in a shooting incident with police today. This is on top of the 10 people who have already been killed in the process of this violent strike.

We send our deepest condolences to the friends and family of all 27 people who have died since the start of the week. Our thoughts and prayers will be with them in this difficult time.

We call on union leaders, the police and everyone else involved to immediately work towards a de-escalation of the conflict. All action must be taken to avoid further bloodshed.

An urgent independent investigation is required to determine exactly what happened; and who is responsible for this massacre. The families of everyone involved, and indeed the nation, deserve to know how and why this bloodshed occurred.

Statement issued by Helen Zille, Democratic Alliance leader, August 16 2012
