The Portfolio Committee on Police notes the publication of the Notice by the Police Commissioner regarding the destruction of firearms. The notice was published in the Government Gazette in the name of national police commissioner, General Khehla Sitole, in terms of section 136 (2) of the Firearms Control Act of 2000.

The committee supports the National Commissioner and the Minister in this endeavour and congratulates them on the steps taken towards the destruction of firearms. The committee views this as a commendable step in reducing the number of firearms on the streets and a positive contribution to making South Africa safe.

Regarding the proposed Firearms Amnesty, the committee awaits further information it has requested to process the firearms amnesty. Upon receipt of the information, the committee hopes to process and continue the discussion on how to rid our streets of firearms as a key pillar of the fight against crime. The committee urges all parties to co-operate in keeping our people safer.
