28/32 WCape municipalities receive unqualified audits - John Steenhuisen

DA MP says number of unqualified audits has increased since DA took over the province in 2009

DA challenges Provincial administrations to table consolidated municipal audit outcomes

This week, the DA-run Western Cape Government released the outcome of its municipal audits.

The audit revealed that the 30 municipalities in the province, 22 of which are DA-run, received their best municipal audit outcomes report card to date.

According to the Western Cape Government's consolidated Municipal Government audit report card of 2012/2013, 28 municipalities received unqualified financial audits, 11 of which were completely clean.

This is a good improvement on the 2009/10, 2010/11 and 2011/12 results which saw 22 unqualified audits (1 of which was completely clean), 25 unqualified audits (2 of which were completely clean) and 26 unqualified audits (5 of which were completely clean), respectively. Every year since we began governing the Western Cape in 2009, we have achieved better audit reports at municipal level.

The DA challenges other provincial administrations to follow suit and make their consolidated municipal audit outcomes public by 31 January 2014.

It is imperative that these municipal audit outcomes are made public in order to enable voters to assess provincial and local administration's financial governance records and commitment to eradicating corruption.

Where we govern in the Western Cape, the DA has done well on its promise to improve service delivery and ensure accountability of public funds.

We can and will bring the same to the rest of South Africa.

Statement issued by John Steenhuisen MP, DA Shadow Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, January 24 2014
