Malegapuru Makgoba planning a racial dictatorship - AfriForum Youth

Charl Oberholzer says the ANC is trying to manipulate rectors by suggesting that white students are a burden on universities

Prof Makgoba starting a dictatorship

AfriForum Youth said today that the proposal by the ministerial oversight committee, of whom Prof Malegapuru Makgoba is the chairperson, that a transformation scale be employed to measure the performance of universities in respect of race, is an example of a racial dictatorship which places greater emphasis on skin colour than the education of our youth.

"If funding of universities is going to be based on racial percentages, universities will be compelled to regard whites as second rate citizens. The ANC is trying to manipulate rectors by suggesting that white students are a burden on universities," said Charl Oberholzer, National Chair of AfriForum Youth.

AfriForum Youth had a meeting with the Department of Higher Education at the end of 2010 where the organisation submitted a proposal that the funding formula for universities be amended to reward multilingual universities for their efforts to use more than one language as medium of instruction. The current proposal will in fact hinder these efforts and force universities to use English as the only medium of instruction. Students will be denied the opportunity to be educated in their mother tongue.

"Once again, race is the focus, rather than quality education and the promotion of mother-tongue education," Oberholzer said.

AfriForum Youth has scheduled a meeting for 30 October 2013 with the Department of Higher Education to discuss transformation and the effect of racial profiling in higher education.
