Politicsweb goes independent

A note from the editor to our readers

Dear Reader,

After fairly lengthy negotiations about the nature and future of our partnership, it was mutually agreed that Moneyweb and Politicsweb would go their separate ways from the beginning of November 2010.

Politicsweb is now a fully independent entity - and is no longer part of the Moneyweb network.

Over the past few years the website has built up a critical mass of readers and contributors. It is accessed by between 60,000 and 80,000 unique users a month. And it has, I believe, come to play an important role in South African political debate.

Going forward Politicsweb will continue to: publish critical reporting, analysis and opinion of political developments in South Africa; do its best to help foster a culture of democratic debate and discussion; and provide a comprehensive record of the key political statements, speeches and documents of the day.

It is worth restating, at this point, the mission of the website (as formulated by George Palmer):

"The quality of decision-making in a democracy is largely determined by access to reliable information on, and analysis of, the policies proposed and implemented.

All policy-making inevitably involves trade-offs that need to be carefully considered by the public. The better informed South Africans are, the more likely their judgments will be in the best long-term interest of the country and all its citizens.

In a multi-ethnic society like South Africa, reaching consensus in the marketplace of ideas requires the broadest participation in the discussion of policy alternatives and their implications. It is Politicsweb's Mission to provide an easily accessible forum conveying a wide range of informed opinion on politics, economics and social issues."

Best regards,

Dr James Myburgh
