In commemoration of what would have been FW de Klerk’s 87th birthday on 18 March, the FW de Klerk Foundation released the first of a series of 17 exclusive video interviews in which the former president shared his memories of his life and career.

Episode 1 covered FW de Klerk’s roots, including his childhood, family and schooling from 1936 to 1952.

In the video released for the first time today, Mr De Klerk shares his experiences from 1953 to 1972 – at university, in marriage and in his career as an attorney in Vereeniging.

There are a total of 17 interviews, all conducted in the last year of FW de Klerk’s life by Dave Steward, Chairman of the FW de Klerk Foundation and a long-time associate and friend of the former president.

The Foundation will continue to release a new episode on their website, Youtube and social media platforms every two weeks.

The videos – together with the proposed FW de Klerk Archive – aim to contribute towards the preservation of FW de Klerk’s legacy and to provide a useful resource for scholars, historians and anyone interested in learning more about the crucial role that he played in the constitutional transformation of South Africa.
