UCT looking into 'I don’t care if I pee on a black man' incident

University says once investigation is completed it will decide whether it will take any further steps against the student concerned

UCT investigates allegations against student

17 November 2014

The University of Cape Town confirms that one of its students is currently being charged with assault and crimen injuria in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court in Cape Town, following an off-campus incident that took place in Claremont in January this year. The student is studying a Bachelor of Commerce at UCT and is in his first year (see Weekend Argus report).

UCT is currently establishing the facts of the matter and is investigating the allegations. Once the university has completed its investigation, it will decide whether it will take any further steps against the student.

The case in the court is a state prosecution, and UCT is following the case and will take serious note of the outcome.

Because of the fact that the case is being pursued by the state and now also investigated by UCT, we are unable to comment on the details until the cases are finalised.

UCT views the matter as of extreme importance, will follow proper procedure and will not hesitate to act. UCT has the highest expectations of its students and their conduct is part and parcel of their performance. Thousands of our students behave impeccably and when a few don't we will, after we have followed due and fair process, act in the necessary way.

Anyone who might have information about the alleged incident, is encouraged to contact Mr Steven Ganger at UCT's Campus Protection Services on 021 650 2226.
