Gauteng Health MEC Brian Hlongwa must come clean and disclose all his sources of private income.

According to a report in today's Sowetan newspaper, "his businesses make 10 times more money than his salary as the head of the provincial health department".

This is a clear breach of the Executive Members Ethics Act that prohibits MECs from "undertaking any other paid work" (Section 2 (2) (b) ).

I have today referred this issue to both the Public Protector and the Integrity Commissioner in the Gauteng Legislature, Advocate Jules Browde.

Hlongwa has declared 12 companies in the register of interests, but has claimed that most of them were dormant or shelf companies.

He has also not declared the assets in these companies, including the R7.2 million house he recently purchased in Bryanston under his solely held company Golden Pond Trading 363 (Pty) Ltd.

Hlongwa's gross salary as an MEC is close to R1 million per annum. Where is he getting R10 million income a year that he does not appear to have declared in the register of interests?

He is an arrogant fat cat who should spend all his time fixing up our hospitals rather than his lucrative private interests.

If he is found to have undertaken any other paid work, he should be dismissed from office.
