ANC STATEMENT ON THE APPOINTMENT OF NEW EDUCATION MEC

7 OCTOBER 2013

The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal welcomes the appointment of Comrade Peggy Nkonyeni as the new MEC for Education and we have no doubt that she will perform her tasks conscientiously, with passion and commitment to improve the standard of education in our province.

Comrade Nkonyeni has been appointed to lead the department that has since 2009 been transformed to be one of the best performing departments in the country as evidenced by the improvements in the standard of teaching and learning, the construction of world class schools infrastructure and the building of high morale among educators.

We are confident that Cde Nkonyeni, who has been an outstanding Speaker of the provincial legislature, will be able to carry on with the good work that the department has done under the stewardship of Cde Senzo Mchunu who directed the department to greater heights through the implementation of the ANC resolutions and policies. The ANC conveys its gratitude to the outgoing education MEC, Cde Mchunu who has served our people diligently since his appointment.

Comrade Nkonyeni brings a wealth of government experience she has acquired since she joined the provincial legislature in 1999. Under her leadership, the legislature has functioned in an effective and professional manner and it has become a true champion of the interests of the people.

The ANC is optimistic that Cde Nkonyeni will continue to elevate education to its rightful place, to improve the quality of learning and teaching and the management of schools which is something that we regard as of paramount importance to our country's advancement.

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal regards the appointment as part of strengthening the provincial government and we urge all the stakeholders to work with the new MEC to ensure that education continues to receive the attention it deserves.
