SA facing a debt crisis at current growth rate - Pieter Mulder

FF+ leader also says electioneering around land messes up good relationships and threatens food security

Agriculture could solve SA's growth problems

"South Africa is facing a financial and debt crisis if the country's economic growth does not improve considerably above the current figure of 0,9%," Dr. Pieter Mulder, deputy minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and FF Plus leader, says.

Agriculture is the one sector which is in a position to help solve South Africa's growth rate and unemployment problems. The precondition is however that the government immediately investigates how rising input costs can be brought under control. The uncertainties which are caused by irresponsible comments about land should also be resolved, according to Dr. Mulder.

Dr. Mulder spoke at a Free State Agricultural Conference for young farmers which was organised by the TAU at Aldam near Ventersburg.

Dr. Mulder pointed out that political instability and riots had occurred in various countries following food shortages. That is why food security is the most important negotiating argument which commercial farmers in South Africa, possess.

With the 2014 elections drawing nearer, land and agriculture is suddenly again being used to rile up emotions and garner votes. It is short-sighted, it messes up good relationships and threatens food security, according to Mulder.

More black commercial farmers are needed who could also put pressure on government. To succeed in this, it is necessary that black farmers in communal areas are given greater certainty about land use in those areas. Only then, will they be able to make a contribution to assist in developing those areas.
