Zuma has taken a bold step - SACP

Party says appointment of arms deal inquiry signals seriousness in fight against corruption

SACP welcomes the appointment of the Commission of Enquiry into the "Arms Deal"

The SACP welcomes the announcement by the Presidency that President Jacob Zuma has decided to appoint a commission of enquiry to investigate allegations of any wrongdoing in the Strategic Defence Procurement Packages, otherwise known as the "arms deal". The SACP has long called for an establishment of a judicial commission to investigate the alleged wrongdoings.

The SACP hopes in outlining the terms of reference of the commission the commission would be allowed to get to the bottom of the allegations and lay this matter to rest once and for all. This indeed is a bold step that the President has undertaken and we believe as the SACP that it signals the seriousness of this administration in fighting corruption.

This commitment is informed by the SACP's fearless fight against corruption and the alliance as a whole being committed to root out corruption in our society in the campaign that the alliance will launch soon. We hope all will co-operate with the commission. The fight against corruption is not an easy one. Times will be tougher during the proceedings of the commission. The SACP hopes we will all however remain focused and committed to giving corruption a red card.

For too long some had sought to politicise this issue and now that the ANC-alliance led government is dealing with the matter with decisiveness they will be left clutching at straws. The SACP hopes that whatever emerges out of the commission of enquiry and warrants action such action will be taken and we hope the loudhailers who have been making such calls vindictively will support such actions.
