NO3460E

REPLY:

(a) As on 30 September 2011, there were 262 635 South African Police Service (SAPS) firearms on the Provisioning Administration System (PAS) of the SAPS.  These included both the standard and non-standard firearms.

(b) Twenty eight thousand seven hundred and twenty eight (28 728) of the 262 635 SAPS firearms have undergone ballistic testing.  Firearms that have undergone ballistic testing represents 10,9% of the SAPS firearms on the Provisioning Administration System of the SAPS. The ballistic testing of firearms was only prioritised after the appointment of the new Divisional Commissioner and this testing process is now being rolled out as a priority project.
