150. Ms B P Mabe (ANC-Gauteng) to ask the Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform:

Whether, with regard to the reopening of the lodging of land claims, any challenges are being experienced in this regard; if not, (a) how many claims (i) have been settled or (ii) are still pending and (b) what are the estimated costs to finalise such outstanding claims; if so, (aa) what challenges, (bb) how are such challenges addressed and resolved and (cc) what progress has been made? THE MINISTER OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT AND LAND REFORM

No. The reopening of lodgement of claims will take place once the Restitution of Land Rights Amendment Bill has been signed into law. The Bill is presently being considered by Parliament.

(a)(i) 77 334 as at the end of 31st March 2013.

 (ii)  8 733 as at the end of 31st March 2013.

(b) The Commission on Restitution of Land Rights is not in a position to pre-determine the estimated costs to finalise the outstanding land claims. There are claims that are still on research which the Commission has not yet determined if they are valid or not. From the claims still outstanding the Department is not sure which settlement option the claimants will chose (financial compensation or restoration).
