9 teachers die in Zeerust taxi crash - YCL

League offers its condolences to families and pupils of the victims

YCL offers condolences to the families of the teachers who passed away in the Zeerust Taxi accident.

The Young Communist League of South African [Ufasimba] would like to offer its condolences to the families of the 9 teachers who died in a taxi accident in Zeerust, North West, this morning on their way to a conference.

The teachers lost their lives when their taxi collided with a Bakkie head on and then caught fire. This is a great loss to our both our country and our education system considering that currently we don't have enough teachers and also brain drain. To lose nine teachers in one accident is a tragedy and unacceptable. We appeal to authorities to investigate the cause of the accident and perpetrators must be brought to book.

We send our most sincere condolences to the family of the teachers, the learners and the community of Zeerust. Our thoughts are with them during their darkest hour. The YCL makes a plea to the Department of Education to provide counseling to the families, learners and other teachers as well.

Statement issued by Mafika Mndebele, YCL national spokesperson, September 9 2011
