9/10 best municipalities in SA DA governed - Kevin Mileham

DA MP welcomes release of findings of the GGA's Govt Performance Index

DA Delivers: 9 out of 10 best municipalities in SA are DA governed

29 February 2016

The DA welcomes the release of the Government Performance Index, compiled by research and advocacy group Good Governance Africa (GGA), which found that 12 out of the 20 best run municipalities in the country are governed by the DA, with 9 of them in the top 10. In contrast to this, the worst 20 performing municipalities are all governed by the ANC.

This demonstrates that that DA’s continued dedication and commitment to the poor is improving the quality of life for all citizens where we govern by providing access to piped water, reliable electricity supply, refuse removal and proper sanitation.

The GGA ranked the country’s 234 local and metropolitan municipalities according to 15 different criteria across three spheres of performance: administration, economic development and service delivery.

Dr Alain Tschudin, executive director of the GGA, said that “DA municipalities generally performed well across all three performance clusters. With regard to service delivery, the DA’s highlights include refuse removal, water, sanitation and provision of electricity. In administration, its highlights are municipal capacity and financial soundness…In economic development, the DA did well in terms of the poverty and unemployment indicators”.

Our success is attributable to our conviction in limiting political interference in public administration, strengthening transparency and accountability, and vigilantly fighting against corruption and maladministration. We’re dedicated to ensuring that best practice models are studied and replicated, and ultimately, that people always come first.

This should serve to encourage South Africans to vote for the DA in the Local Government Elections later this year. The message from the GGA is clear: where the DA governs, it makes progress.

The DA is committed to improving the lives of all South Africans and our track record reflects the progress we have made in doing so. We will continue to fight to bring change to the millions of South Africans who suffer at the hands of an uncaring government that has failed to grow the economy and create jobs.
