ActionSA opens mayoral candidate election contest

10 May 2021

Last month, ActionSA unveiled its ground-breaking Candidate Election System, which for the first time, will give South Africans the power to directly elect the candidates they want to represent ActionSA on the ballot paper in the upcoming Local Government Elections. This system puts power in the hands of communities who, otherwise, would give their votes to political parties and be given ineffective candidates in return.

Today, we are proud to announce the opening of our mayoral candidate election process, inviting ActionSA Candidates who believe they can lead our Cities to apply to be Mayoral Candidates. These candidates will be subjected to public scrutiny through an open campaign that will culminate in the holding of the Candidate Elections.

We reiterate our invitation that any eligible voter may participate in our Candidate Elections, subject to them registering on our online portal. We want South Africans, from all works of life, who are committed to fighting for the wellbeing of residents to stand and be counted. We want residents to identify and select candidates through a transparent selection process.

We are disrupting the political landscape in South Africa by ensuring that our candidates are directly accountable to residents first, and ActionSA second. The days of political elites handpicking candidates for political positions is a thing of the past and ActionSA is driving that change.

In the coming weeks, residents of every ward will have the chance to put candidates to the test through open debates and canvasing within our primaries, so they can elect the ActionSA representative they want to contest the 2021 Local Government Election.

ActionSA stands at the ready to provide an alternative to the broken political system that has failed South Africans. We will assemble a team of South Africans, committed to public service and not service of political parties, who have the passion and commitment to achieve our vision for a country that works for all its residents.

Registration is currently open, with both prospective candidates and voters able to register at https://vote.actionsa.org.za/.

Registration will be open for candidates until the 21st of May, and for voters until the 7th of June. The Candidate Elections will take place during the week of 14 June.
