The candidates of the civil rights organisation AfriForum who recently took part in the Council Election of the University of Stellenbosch (US), Hein Gonzales, Adv Jan Heunis and Prof Andre Coetzee, were all three elected to the US Council.

Gonzales, Heunis and Coetzee are big supporters of, amongst others, the retention of Afrikaans as mother tongue medium of instruction at Maties.

“We received the mandate from the Afrikaans speaking community to ensure that Afrikaans is guaranteed and developed as mother tongue medium of instruction. The US must be a University of multilingualism instead of excluding the Afrikaans speaking community,” said Hein Gonzales, AfriForum’s Provincial Coordinator for Mpumalanga and Limpopo and newly elected US Council Member.

“We would like to thank everyone who participated in the election, and more specifically the members who voted for us, for their support and the opportunity to be their mouthpiece on the Council,” concluded Gonzales.
