AfriForum committed to peaceful solution at UP

Organisation says it is committed to ensuring the safety and protecting the interests of Afrikaans students

AfriForum’s statement after meeting with Prof Cheryl de la Rey

22 February 2016

AfriForum had an urgent meeting with Prof Cheryl de la Rey, Rector of the University of Pretoria (UP), this afternoon.

During the meeting various issues of importance and the immediate continuation of the academic programme at the University were discussed.

AfriForum was given the assurance that a final decision regarding Afrikaans as language of instruction has not yet beentaken. Prof De la Rey has undertaken to organize a meeting between AfriForum and the University’s language task team in order to provide AfriForum with an opportunity to make an input re the University's language policy before the matter will be referred to the University Council for a final decision.

AfriForum indicated that it is committed to:

- help to find a peaceful solution to the dispute;

- treat the continuation of the academic programme as a top priority;

- participate in the consultation process regarding the university’s language policy;

- provide a written input to the process;

- pursue good relations and promote mutual recognition and respect amongst students; and

- ensure the safety and protect the interests of the Afrikaans students.

AfriForum also accepted the invitation of the Student Representative Council (SRC) to meet regarding the matter and welcomed the opportunity, but regretted that earlier requests by AfriForum Youth to resolve the issue by means of reasonablediscussion had not been accepted.

According to AfriForum, the EFF’s fight against Afrikaans is just a next step in their campaign to disrupt the campus with a view to mobilization and the creation of publicity for the forthcoming municipal elections.
