AfriForum Youth says it won’t budge on language at the Puk

Organisation hands over memorandum in effort to prevent “last remaining Afrikaans campus” from switching to English

AfriForum Youth fights for Afrikaans at the Puk

AfriForum Youth handed a memorandum to Prof. Dan Kgwadi, Vice-Chancellor of the North West University regarding the retention of Afrikaans at the Puk.

After the handing-over, the youth organisation discussed non-negotiable burning issues with Prof. Kgwadi, which include the protection of Afrikaans as language of instruction at the Potchefstroom campus of the NWU, the rejection of transformation as well as quality education and the victimisation of student leaders who take a stand for Afrikaans.

“No-one will take decisions regarding Afrikaans and Afrikaner students at the Puk on our behalf. We will speak for ourselves about matters that are important to us. We want to learn, live and grow in Afrikaans. We were given the assurance by Prof. Kgwadi that no student and/or members of house committees and the SRC, who take a stand for Afrikaans and other important matters, will be victimised by his office or any other staff member,” says Marcus Pawson, National Representative of AfriForum Youth.

“The last Afrikaans university campus in South Africa will only remain Afrikaans through organised student pressure. It’s time that every student take a stand for the Puk and support AfriForum Youth without fear for victimisation and intimidation. As long as we show respect to others, we can expect respect in return.”

Prof. Kgwadi’s office has undertaken to hand the memorandum of AfriForum Youth to the NWU Board and to respond to it in writing.
