ANC continues to fail at delivering – Athol Trollip

Meagre percentage of housing delivered shows ruling party doesn't care enough, says DA

Only 15% housing delivered in NMB this year shows ongoing ANC maladministration

20 December 2015

Parliamentary replies to DA questions have revealed that only 440 houses have been delivered in Nelson Mandela Bay in this financial year.

With an already meagre target of 2778 houses before this financial year ends, just 440 houses translates into a shocking delivery rate of only 15%.

Of a backlog of approximately 70,000 units, it is simply disgraceful that the ANC government, both at a local and national level, continues to fail at delivering on never-ending promises of housing in this Metro. The ANC simply does not care enough.

We continue to see vain publicity stunts, where one or two houses are delivered by a visiting Minister or by the broken-promises NMB administration, but it is clear that once-off events are not delivering anything close to the number of houses desperately needed.

At the same time roads, dignified sanitation, refuse collection, gangsterism-fighting techniques, reliable water supply and jobs are also being cruelly denied by the governance failures of the ANC.

A dedicated and caring government would set targets, and would meet them. Housing would be properly budgeted and would be meticulously administered - value for money houses would be delivered to all who qualify in a sustained roll-out. That is the change that our people deserve.

As President Zuma has made crystal clear for him and his cronies; the ANC comes first, before South Africa and we are seeing this play out in Nelson Mandela Bay more than ever before.

The DA, in government, will immediately act to turn human settlements around by:

1. Action forensic audits on all supply chain management. Prosecute any official found guilty of side-stepping supply chain management.

2. Implement contractor and SMME screening to guarantee qualifications, capabilities and competence.

3. Zero-tolerance on political interference. Prosecute any individual found guilty of political interference.

4. Implement legislation around preventing government officials from doing tender work with government.

5. Set out a standard operating procedure to ensure seamless cohesion and coordination between all spheres of government, especially in the departments of human settlements, water and sanitation.

The DA can win Nelson Mandela Bay in next year’s election to usher in a clean government, committed to improving service delivery, creating jobs and fighting corruption.
