ANC will win in Tshwane - Mokonyane

Pretoria - ANC head of elections Nomvula Mokonyane says the party will win Tshwane Municipality in the upcoming local government elections.

"We never go into battle with an intention to lose," Mokonyane told reporters in Winterveldt on Friday.

"We are going to win Tshwane, and convincingly so."

Mokonyane was speaking during the walkabout by party leaders in Tshwane. The leaders started their day in Soshanguve where they interacted with residents.

They were supposed to be joined by President Jacob Zuma, but he missed the first part of the day due to problems experienced with his plane.

Mokonyane, during the second part of the programme in Winterveldt, said the ANC had plans to move the municipality foward.

"We have a programme as the African National Congress to move Tshwane forward. We are not talking about any other party, we talk better about the ANC. We concede on our challenges and we have a plan to resolve them," she said.

"Watch this space, on August 5, Tshwane will be having an ANC leadership," she added.

Mokonyane maintained that they had a strong backing in the city and that Friday's activities were to consolidate the support base.

She said they would be using a three-pronged approach during their election campaigning.

"Our approach is to consolidate the base, reach out to new voters and, most importantly, break into new territory," she said.

Mokonyane added that, while visiting Soshanguve, residents had raised issues of unemployment and schools being too far away.

She said the ANC had made promises to address all the issues raised.

"Three things came up during our interactions with the residents. Among them was the issue of unemployment. Secondly was the issue of the distance to schools, as that is a new area where people have just moved in. They have children attending schools that are far and their request was that we should avail scholar transport," said Mokonyane.

She added that people also showed appreciation for houses delivered.
