Floyd Shivambu says 2010 class should ignore Solidarity's warnings of high future unemployment

ANC YOUTH LEAGUE CONGRATULATES LEARNERS WHO PASSED 2010 SENIOR CERTIFICATE EXAMINATIONS:

06 January 2011

The African National Congress Youth League congratulates all learners who passed the 2010 Senior Certificate examinations. We also congratulate the many hard working teachers, parents, guardians, school principals, and department of education officials at all levels for putting an additional effort amidst challenges in 2010.

We applaud provincial, regional and branch structures of the ANC YL for co-ordinating additional classes and lessons for particularly Grade 12 learners during public servants strike and towards examinations. These efforts will not go unnoticed and the 67% pass rate is testimony that all these efforts were not futile.

All learners who have passed the senior certificate should now make all efforts to enrol with credible and accredited institutions of Higher Learning, particularly Universities, Universities of Technology and Further Education and Training colleges to attain skills. Academically deserving and needy learners should know that a government bursary/loan scheme exists to fund students' tuition and accommodation needs in all Higher Education Institutions and FET Colleges. Higher Education and FET Colleges students who are already within higher education and training institutions should within the next few weeks, join these institutions' officials in ensuring that new learners are given the necessary support and information for registration purposes.

The 2010 Class should never listen, nor believe the sensational remarks by right-wing Unions that 60% of those who passed in 2010 will not be employed. With the necessary qualifications, South African youth have many job and economic opportunities which will sustainably empower them for the rest of their lives. All the efforts which the ANC government is putting in place with the industrial strategy and radical change of economic policy will result in many job opportunities and such will need a skilled and trained youth. Young people should go all out to attain the necessary skills, education and training so that they are ready to contribute to the development of South African economy and society at large.

Those who have not succeeded should not despair, because there are many options, which include vocational training in Further Education and Training Colleges. Those who can repeat Grade 12 should gracefully do so and those eligible for supplementary examinations should from today work harder towards the examinations.

The ANC Youth League is proud of the Class of 2010 and all the people who put an additional effort to ensure that 2010 senior certificate results are better than previous years' results. We are proud of our country and its great potential.
