ANCYL shocked by ANC KZN's comments

League says if PEC wants to be respected it should at least be consistent

ANC YOUTH LEAGUE STATEMENT ON THE ARTICULATIONS OF ANC KWAZULU NATAL PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

29 March 2012

The ANC Youth League is shocked and very worried by the statement of the ANC in KwaZulu Natal released by its Provincial Secretary Sihle Zikalala on the 28th of March 2012.

In the statement, the ANC in KwaZulu Natal or Secretary Sihle Zikalala said, "the meeting took note of the pronouncements by various ANC Leaders during the ANCYL Centenary Celebrations Rally held in Limpopo on the 25th March 2012. The ANC KZN PEC takes a dim-view on the conduct of leaders who continues to speak about disciplinary issues in public. We are of a strong belief that some individuals will stop at nothing in undermining the internal organisational principles. Issues of Disciplinary Action are internal matters and should be treated as such".

The statement of the ANC KwaZulu Natal further said, "We are not surprised about the fact that they have started such a campaign even after the NEC has agreed that the issues of leadership should not be discussed. Indeed, this is not the first NEC decision to be undermined by these members". This was said in re-action to discussion of the ANC leadership question towards the ANC 53rd National Conference in December 2012.

It looks like discussion of the leadership question and succession in the ANC is only reserved for comrades from KwaZulu Natal and in KwaZulu Natal only. In more than one occasion, the ANC Youth League has written to the Secretary General of the ANC making him aware of ANC leaders, including Chairperson Zweli Mkhize who has been openly campaigning for some leaders to be elected in the 53rd National Conference of the ANC in December 2012.

ANC regional conferences in KwaZulu Natal either had banners or t-shirts written "Zuma for 2nd term" and there was no word from the leadership of the ANC in KwaZulu Natal condemning such. Threats to kill leaders of the ANC YL have always been hurled from the MKMVA in KwaZulu Natal and the PEC of the ANC in KwaZulu Natal never said anything.

On the disciplinary hearing against the leadership of the ANC Youth League, it is disingenuous of the leadership of the ANC in KwaZulu Natal to speak against NEC members who only said they will express their opinions once the disciplinary hearing is done. There are members of the ANC NEC and officials who did not only say they will express their opinions once every process is done, but went further to announce the outcomes of a process that is still underway. If the leadership of the ANC in KwaZulu Natal wants to be respected, they should speak consistently on principle, and avoid applying different rules and principles to different people.

The ANC is a not a regional organisation, and the ANC does not belong to KwaZulu Natal only. The ANC YL is concerned that other Provinces have been silent when the PEC of KwaZulu Natal is elevating itself into a national structure, issuing statements and comments on political issues that are at a national level, whilst turning a blind eye on wrong occurrences in their own Province.
