The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises, Mr Khaya Magaxa, has welcomed the Minister of Public Enterprises’ announcement of the appointment of Mr Dan Marokane as Eskom’s new Chief Executive Officer.

In welcoming the announcement, Mr Magaxa said the committee views the appointment as fitting and progressive based on Mr Marokane’s wealth of experience and expertise in the energy sector. “We are confident that Mr Marokane’s sound and visionary leadership will contribute greatly at Eskom, particularly in creating stability at administrative level and promoting growth of the power utility,” said Mr Magaxa.

Mr Magaxa also mentioned that Eskom has weathered numerous challenges in recent years, including financial constraints, operational inefficiencies and ageing infrastructure. These problems have had a significant impact on Eskom’s ability to provide affordable electricity on a sustainable basis to the people of South Africa. “We are optimistic that Mr Marokane, given his knowledge and rich experience of the energy sector, will turn around the power utility and place it on a trajectory of future growth.”

Mr Magaxa said loadshedding causes major disruptions to all sectors of the South African economy. “The country places its hope on him and his team. As the committee, we are assuring him our support through our oversight role over the power utility,” added Mr Magaxa.
