The Democratic Alliance (DA) in North West welcomes the arrest of five suspects that was linked to the murder of two Mareetsane SAPS officers, Constable Simon Ntsekeletsa and Sergeant Mojalefa Molete, after they were found in a burnt police van on 27 July.

We commend the Tlakgameng farming community who assisted the SAPS by setting up a helicopter search that led them to the vehicle wherein the two officers went missing on Monday night, after reporting a vehicle loaded with suspected stolen goats.

The suspects will appear in the Ganyesa Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder, malicious damage to property and possession of a stolen firearm tomorrow.

These murders again places the spotlight on rural safety and the need to reinstate SAPS units that will exclusively deal with farm attacks and stock theft.

The dangers that rural communities face is evident and it validates the DA’s strong objections to the amendment of the gun bill. Disarming civilians while so many illegal firearms are in circulation among criminals does not bode well and will not achieve any positive results.

The DA extends its deepest condolences to the families of the two deceased officers and will follow this court case to ensure that justice prevails.
