SADTU calls for swift action following alleged rape of a learner

19 May 2021

SADTU Gauteng is dismayed by the report of alleged rape of Umqhele Secondary school learner in Ivory Park. The Grade 10 learner was allegedly raped by a teacher who is currently on the run. This incident has caused an uproar to the extent of disruption of schooling in the area.

The union is deeply concerned about this incident as it dents the image of our noble profession. It also instils fear and anxiety in schools which are supposed to be safe havens where quality teaching and learning should take place.

We welcome the steps taken by the Gauteng Department of Education, including the necessary support to the affected learner. We expect due disciplinary process to be completed as soon as possible. We also call on the law enforcement institutions to deploy the necessary resources to subject the alleged perpetrator to the due process of the law.

Further, we call on all stakeholders and the entire community to collaborate and restore order in all our schools and leave the matter in the hands of the department and the justice system. We need to utilize the much needed limited school time optimally.
