Cape Town apologises for Tweede Nuwe Jaar debacle - Patricia de Lille

Mayor reiterates that the City had no control over the last minute cancellation of event

City apologises to residents and tourists for Cape Cultural and Carnival Committee's failure to host annual Tweede Nuwe Jaar celebrations

The annual Tweede Nuwe Jaar celebration is a historic event in Cape Town which has for generations been enjoyed by thousands of people, therefore the event must take place.

The City of Cape Town would like to apologise to residents and tourists for the Cape Cultural and Carnival Committee's failure to stage the annual Tweede Nuwe Jaar minstrel parade which was planned for Monday 5 January 2015.

We would like apologise to the many communities for the inconvenience caused by the last-minute cancellation which the City had no control over.

The City of Cape Town had a legal agreement with the committee after they requested that they organise their own event while the City would provide resources to support them in hosting the event.

As the City we have kept to our end of the agreement and done all we can to assist the committee.

We would like to encourage the Cape Cultural and Carnival Committee to submit their event application for a date which is suitable to them and to follow the process in order to ensure that they host this historic event and that its success continues.
