Cape Town mayoral candidate won't be imposed - Grant Pascoe

DA metro chairperson says democratic processes will be followed

SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON THE DA'S MAYORAL NOMINATION PROCEDURES

The Democratic Alliance Cape Town Metro Region regrets the inaccurate reports in the media over the past few days relating to the Party's mayoral nomination procedures.

The DA is a party that practices internal democracy. The DA's constitution does not grant any person the power to appoint candidates to any position. The DA's mayoral candidates are elected by secret ballot by a mayoral electoral college which consists of 30 members, comprised as follows:

  • Ten members are elected by the 48-person Metro Region Electoral College from amongst their own ranks. Metro Region Electoral College members, in turn, are elected from among the branch delegates to the Metro Regional Council.
  • Five members are elected from the ranks of the Metro Regional Executive Committee.
  • Five members are elected from the ranks of the Provincial Executive Committee.
  • And ten members are elected by the Federal Executive Committee.

It should be clear from the above that the body which will elect the DA's nominee for Mayor contains representatives from branch level right through to federal level and therefore cannot be manipulated.

Any member is free to put in a nomination for mayor, and any member is free to lobby for the candidate of their choice.

It is inaccurate for anyone to accuse any structure or person in the party of imposing this or that candidate and any person making such claims is ignorant of the Party's internal procedures.
