Charges laid against Zille over spying - ANC WCape

Faiez Jacobs says law must take its course in order for truth to come out about Premier's cloak and dagger behaviour

Why does Zille weave a cloak of deception?

14 November 2015

Delusional DA premier of the Western Cape Helen Zille is all over again busy with a witch’s brew of untested allegations dished up as the truth in a government blog and official press releases. It is aimed at discrediting our police officers and feeding distrust to communities for cheap party political point scoring.

It is absolutely outrageous that it is the same DA that preaches to others to not politicise our police service that stoops to politicising the South African Police Service. It further taints the professional officers as agents of the ANC when they are in fact in the service of all and every community.

It is against this backdrop that the ANC today lays a criminal charge against Zille for employing a private covert intelligence investigator to execute illegal communications surveillance work on state land and property in terms of the Intelligence Services Act (65 of 2002) with taxpayer money to the amount of R115 800. This aspect now becomes a matter of police investigation.

ANC Western Cape secretary Faiez Jacobs says: “Zille is trying to pre-empt a court case that is still to be considered by putting up a smoke screen around her investigator that is already charged with amongst others fraud, perjury and contravening communications legislation (one Paul Scheepers is due in the Bellville Magistrate Court on Monday 16 November 2015 on CAS number 195/5/15). This anticipation is aimed at obstructing justice to prevent the truth to come out and to hide some facts behind an obfuscating veil of a usual dose of political conflation by DA spin, lies, smoke and mirrors.

“What is even more telling is the fact that Zille backs a person under investigation who presents a defence after he was discovered. One can only wonder why he did not reveal his version to senior police bosses, the Independent Police Investigation Directorate or even the police secretariat before giving Zille his information. Zille’s bias raises more questions than answers. Why is Zille referring to a version in her blog and other communication that is still to be heard in the Western Cape High Court?

“Why is this same person, a suspended police captain moonlighting for Zille, running a private investigation business concurrent with his police work without due prior permission? Why is it suspected that he illicitly did private work? Then the question arises why Zille very much preferred to side with the said captain and his version without giving the court a chance to decide on the matter?

“That leaves room for the notion that Zille advances cynical, paranoid and conspiracy theories. She clasps at purported straws to collaborate the untried account of a suspended police officer who has yet to prove his story in a court of law. This is not only undermining the Rule of Law and our independent judiciary, but also natural justice by unduly trying to infer motives and aspersions onto others – including her political rivals. What is Zille trying to cover up? Is she merely trying to redeem herself? Now the law must take its course to get to the bottom of this spy premier’s cloak and dagger saga.
