'Cop killers' must not get bail - Popcru

21 June 2016

Cape Town - Parliament must urgently pass a law that disqualifies people charged with killing police officers from getting bail, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) said at a memorial service for slain Cape Town Constable Mthetho Sandla in Delft on Tuesday.

"It must be written in the books of the statute that once you kill a policeman, forget about bail," said Popcru's Western Cape secretary Mncedisi Mbolekwa.

"There is no way we can't make a law like that. Once they are caught, they are going to cry," he said, as he expressed anger over the death of Sandla, a Popcru member.

Sandla was killed in an attempted robbery at a Caltex garage in Delft in the early hours of June 13.

His killers are still at large.

Western Cape police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Khombinkosi Jula said six police officers had been attacked in the Western Cape since he took office four months ago.

"We have a serious challenge in the Western Cape," said Jula.

"We must never retreat," he said, vowing police would do all they can to find and arrest Sandla's killers.

"They are going to be relentlessly pursued until they are arrested."

He urged the community to help the police.
