COPE SM on AfriForum Youth and Tuks SRC elections

Organisation says it formed alliance purely for the purposes of portfolios

Statement of COPE SM at Tuks regarding SRC elections

On Monday the 4th of October 2011 the SRC of the University of Pretoria was elected from its student parliament.

In the absence of a substantial black majority, COPE SM and the University of Pretoria International students society formed an alliance with Afriforum, DA, VF and Doxa Deo strictly for the purposes of portfolios.

The executive would like to stress that there is no ideological consensus or similarity with all members of the alliance but rather that it was joined to ensure that the student population as a whole is represented

To this end, an invitation was extended to SASCO to join forces, which they declined. The statement released by Charl Oberholzer to politicsweb on Wednesday 06 October does not reflect the views of COPE or the SRC.

The SRC will receive its mandate from Student Parliament and that is what will be enforced. COPE remains committed to the promise it has made to students at Tuks fight for:

1. A review of the biased admissions system.

2. Prevention of unreasonable and incremental fee increases

3. More free transport to external campuses

4. Efficient administration of financial assistance to needy students

5. Introduction of vernacular tutorials for struggling students

6. Ensuring that the University and its resources are not used for the preservation of any self interest serving group, tribe or organisation

7.Making sure that more residences are built and food prices reasonably compatible.

We are committed to a multi racial, inclusive and representative SRC.
Being a multi-racial and multi-cultural organization, we are not for the preservation of the interests of one group at the expense of another,

Statement issued by Thabo Mdlalose, Spokesperson for the COPE Student Movement at University of Pretoria, October 6 2010
