DA calls urgent meeting with IEC to address increasing intimidation in KZN

27 July 2016

A multi-party delegation consisting of the Democratic Alliance, Economic Freedom Fighters and the Inkatha Freedom Party have called for an urgent meeting with the Provincial Electoral Officer, Mr Mawethu Mosery, to discuss the increasing incidents of political intolerance and intimidation by the ANC in KwaZulu Natal.

During the course of the election campaign our activists and members have experienced several cases of political intolerance in the province. As we approach the elections on the 03 August, these incidents are becoming increasingly frequent and more violent in nature.

This past weekend, the DA's Provincial Leader, Zwakele Mncwango, Msunduzi Mayoral Candidate and Deputy Leader, Mergan Chetty and dozens of DA activists were prevented from entering and campaigning in Mbali Township in Msunduzi. ANC members hurled bricks at the passing DA motorcade and one ANC member brandishing a chain-saw attempted to attack DA members and caused damage to the vehicle of the Mayoral Candidate.

This incident, together with a dossier of other serious incidents will be handed over to the IEC at the meeting tomorrow.

The EFF and IFP will also be handing over a list of cases of political intolerance and intimidation by the ANC against their members.

The purpose of the meeting is to call upon the IEC to urgently address the increasing political tension in the province and take action against the ANC for its failure to adhere to the electoral code of conduct which they signed. By virtue of their signatory to the code of conduct, they have pledged to ensure that their members contribute to an environment of free and fair elections. However, recent incidents prove that the ANC has no regard for the very code of conduct that they signed and continue to promote division to gain political advantage over their opponents.

The DA's delegation will consist of the Provincial Chairperson, Haniff Hoosen MP, Provincial Leader, Cllr Zwakele Mncwango and the DA's Provincial IEC representative Mark Steele MPL.
