The DA can win Nelson Mandela Bay as ANC broken promises pile up

25 April 2016

The promise to roll out weekly refuse collection in every NMB ward has once again fallen flat. Mayor Jordaan’s original promise to have every ward serviced with refuse collection by the end of October 2015 never materialised, and now the new deadline of the 18th April 2016 has also been missed.

Added to the promise to launch a metro police service on the 30th April 2016, which will not go ahead as promised, Mayor Jordaan has now once again failed to keep his word on refuse collection.

We need change to get South Africa moving forward again. Having launched the DA’s local government manifesto in Johannesburg this past weekend, we are confident that this blueprint for change will convince the people of South Africa that a vote for the DA is a vote for better service delivery, job creation and stopping corruption, as is already the case where the DA governs.

With the DA in government here in NMB, weekly refuse collection in every ward will be a non-negotiable. Under the ANC in NMB, broken promises pile up faster than uncollected refuse.

Too many communities in Nelson Mandela Bay still go without basic services. These things persist, because under ANC governance, promises are broken over and over again. There is a general lack of accountability – because; if Zuma can get away with all of his sins, then so can all ANC mayors.

The municipal Public Health Directorate under consecutive ANC mayors has consistently failed to deliver on its promise to roll out weekly refuse collection, forcing residents from Wells Estate, Motherwell, Missionvale and many other communities to dispose of their waste on illegal dumpsites.

This is a clear example of one metro failure causing and reinforcing another. This endless failure to deliver basic services is the gatekeeper of true freedom.

The DA can win Nelson Mandela Bay at this year’s local government election to usher in a government that improves service delivery, stops corruption and creates jobs.
