DA shocked and saddened by rape of 6-week-old baby

Mike Waters says incident a reminder why campaigns such as the 16 Days of Activism are necessary

DA condemns rape of 6-week-old baby

The Democratic Alliance is shocked and saddened by the brutal rape of a six-week-old baby in Kimberly. We condemn this horrific act in the strongest terms possible. Our sincerest condolences go out to the family, friends and loves ones during this difficult time. There are few words that could possibly explain the pain that they must be going through (see DFA report).

This incident, among many horrific others that take place on a daily basis, is a stark reminder why campaigns such as the 16 Days of Activism are necessary and must be carried out every day of the year.

South African women and children face intolerably high levels of violence and victimisation. It is estimated that 150 children are raped in South Africa every day. Recent crime statistics also revealed a 2.9% increase in sexual offences, which considering the low report rate regarding crimes of this nature is probably much higher.

This is a crisis of untold proportions which must be met by an unrelenting and coordinated government programme of action. We simply cannot stand by any longer when our children are being brutalised, raped and murdered on a daily basis.

Today, we stand in solidarity with the victims and survivors of these crimes. And in doing so will continue to hold government structures to account to ensure that protecting our children is never ever compromised.
