DA submits ANC housing corruption affidavits to SIU – Jacques Smalle

Party says ward councillor illegally evicted residents from their RDP houses and sold them to ANC cronies

DA submits ANC housing corruption affidavits to SIU for investigation

1 June 2016

The Democratic Alliance has today submitted a file of affidavits on behalf of complainants to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) to investigate the alleged ANC housing corruption scandal in Seshego, Limpopo.

This is after the ward councillor has been illegally evicting residents from their RDP houses and sold them to his ANC cronies and friends after they failed to pay solicited bribes since 2011. The councillor further unduly influenced electricity and water meters cuts in some houses whilst intimidating residents and threatening to evict them from their property.

After several complaints to the municipality and exhausting all possible avenues to no avail under the municipal case number ref: 17/4/3/1, charges of intimidation and corruption were laid at the Seshego Police Station against the ANC councillor but no feedback was received from SAPS to date.

The inability by the ANC council to summon the councillor to appear before the ethics committee to account for the alleged corruption is a clear indication that the ANC goes to extremes to protect their own by not holding them to account.

This further demonstrates that the ANC of today has changed and is more disconnected from the people than ever. Their focus is solely on self-enrichment and cronyism.

Currently, the Limpopo housing backlog is 80 000 units and this backlog will not be diminished within the next decade leaving more citizens destitute and robbed of their dignity. In the previous financial year, COGHSTA’s housing programme underspent their budget by more than R500 million.

There the DA governs, we are committed to rooting out corruption and ensuring transparent and fair housing allocations.

We believe that houses are an asset which will empower the poorest in our communities to retain their dignity. The people of Seshego need to vote DA for an honest and responsive government that will stop corruption, provide better services and work hard to create many more jobs and opportunities for all.

The DA calls on the SIU to prudently investigate the alleged corrupt activities and maladministration. We urge President Jacob Zuma to enable this SIU investigation to take place.
