DA to grill Gordhan over Thandi Modise's R1,3m BMW - Tim Harris

MP to submit parliamentary questions over NWest Premier's flouting of 'belt-tightening' measures

DA to submit parliamentary questions to Finance Minister on Premier Modise's R1,3m car

The DA will submit parliamentary questions to the Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan to determine what action will be taken against members of the executive who fail to adhere to the ‘belt-tightening' measures announced by him in October last year (see report).

This follows media reports yesterday that North West Premier Thandi Modise recently spent R1.3-million on a new BMW 750i, despite Minister Gordhan's Cabinet-backed announcement that excessive spending on cars, travel, accommodation, entertainment and other luxuries would be curbed.

I will submit parliamentary questions to Minister Gordhan to establish whether this purchase is permitted in terms of his new belt-tightening provisions. If it isn't, then we have requested detail on the action to be taken against transgressors.

In addition, we call on Minister Gordhan to stick to his guns and not bow to political pressure to water-down his cost-saving measures. Every rand wasted is money that could have been spent on much-needed service delivery.

Statement issued by Tim Harris MP, DA Shadow Minister of Finance, December 6 2013
