DA to take action against ANC for intimidation

30 June 2016

The DA will tomorrow,1 July, lodge a complaint with the IEC in Kimberley regarding an incident where the Mayor of the Siyancuma Municipality, Lorraine Oliphant, allegedly offered a DA candidate money if he would agree to withdraw a case made against the ANC for intimidation.

Oliphant alledgedly sent one of her ward candidates to offer Martin Berring, DA councillor for Ward 3 in Douglas, an amount of R6 000 if he withdrew the case. (Case no: Douglas CAS 139/06/2016). Berring laid a complaint of intimidation against the ANC earlier this week.

The intimidation complaint was laid after Oliphant and her driver harrased him at his private residence and followed him around to voter’s homes. They followed him to a house where he was assisting with a special vote application for an elederly lady. Oliphant and her driver apparently then intimated the elderly lady, demanding to know why she was voting for the DA. They also made several comments about the DA and another DA councillors in Douglas.

A complaint will now also be lodged with the IEC in order for them to investigate Oliphant’s attempted bribe of a DA candidate.

The ANC’s dirty tricks must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. We cannot allow them to intimidate voters and bribe DA candidates.

It would seem that the ANC is becoming increasingly desperate, as the DA continues to welcome more and more South Africans who are hungry for change.

The DA will not be deterred to show South Africans that we are the only party that can bring real, positive change.
