DA welcomes investigation into Matshidiso Mfikoe

Janet Semple says former City Parks political head faces charges of abusing her position

DA welcomes swift response from Johannesburg Council to investigate corruption

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng welcomes the swift response from the Johannesburg Metro Council to investigate allegations of corruption against Cllr Matshidiso Mfikoe, former political head of City Parks and now MMC for Safety and Security. Cllr Mfikoe has been accused of misusing public money for her own benefit (see report).

Allegations against the Cllr include her use of City Parks money to buy herself birthday and Valentine's Day presents, hosting a birthday party at the Parks expense and using Parks money to have a cosmetic makeover.

We hope the swift response to investigate will be followed by action. This kind of behaviour by a senior public representative is totally unacceptable. Not only does it set a very bad example to those in her department but it also prevents the money being used for the purpose it was intended. It deprives people in the City of Johannesburg from receiving what is due to them while a well-paid public representative has her ego stroked with gifts and benefits paid for with public money.
