Enver Daniels to lead probe of Mdluli's claims - Nathi Mthethwa

Other members of task team include Stan Noosi, Abel Mxolisi Shilubane and Julius Molefe

MINISTER MTHETHWA ANNOUNCES MEMBERS OF THE TASK TEAM TO INVESTIGATE MDLULI LETTER

Further reiterates call to society, to afford team time to carry process without any undue interference

PRETORIA - 11 May 2012. The Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa today announced members of the task team that will investigate the allegations made in a letter written by Lieutenant General Richard Mdluli, who was recently shifted as head of Crime Intelligence.

As the Minister stated during his Budget Vote Speech in Parliament on Wednesday, the letter seems to have political connotations and has caused tensions within the management of the South African Police Service (SAPS). It alludes to some conspiracy theory, and names suspended national police commissioner, General Bheki Cele, head of Hawks Lieutenant General Anwa Dramat, operational services head, Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya and Gauteng provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Mzwandile Petrus as ganging up against him. As a result during his address, Minister Mthethwa announced that he had instituted a task team to investigate these allegations because they are so serious as to suggest the meddling of policing functions in politics.

Members of this task team, led by the Chief State Law Adviser, Mr Enver Daniels include Lieutenant General Abel Mxolisi Shilubane from SANDF, Mr Stan Noosi from State Security and SAPS head of legal services, Lieutenant General Julius Molefe.

The terms of reference for the task are to collate the information, including the letter as well as consultation with all the affected people mentioned in the letter, provide in-depth analysis and thereafter compile a report. The report will also give clear recommendations on the way forward. The team has already met and is expected to complete the investigation within a month from now.

The Minister reiterates his call to society, to afford this team time to carry through this process without any undue interference.
