Ferries cancelled to scupper our alternate SONA on Robben Island - EFF

Fighters say pretext used was that urgent repairs needed to be done, but this is nonsense

The EFF statement on the cancellation by politicians of the Robben Island Museum visit

12 February 2015

The EFF condemns the decision of the Robben Island Museum to cancel the pre-arranged and paid for visit by the Central Command Team of the EFF to the Island. The EFF planned and paid for an official visit to Robben Island to hold an alternate State of the Nation Address. As a political movement which appreciates the contribution of Freedom Fighters who were imprisoned in Robben Island from the first political prisoner Autshumao to all generations that were arrested for fighting the regime.

The EFF wanted to visit the Island to draw in the inspiration of Freedom Fighters and assure those that perished at the Island that we have picked up the spear and now fighting towards economic freedom.

Threatened by the political programme of the EFF, the politicians in the Robben Island Museum Council and the Minister of Arts & Culture cancelled all ferries and visits to the Island in the pretext that there will be urgent repairs at the Island.

We know from the staff of Robben Island that there was never any repairs planned for this weekend and this was introduced to prevent the EFF from visiting the Island.

As an Organisation that respects the rule of law and always fights against attempts to abuse public institutions and platforms, we have decided to urgently approach the Court to interdict the decision of the Robben Island Museum's decision to cancel our visit. We approach the Court because we believe that the management of the Island should never enter into political decisions under the pretext of renovations and repairs.

Members of the media will be advised on where the Press Conference and alternate state of the nation address will happen in due time.
