Fort Hare Centenary: A time for reflection

20 May 2016

The DA would like to congratulate the University of Fort Hare on its historical centenary celebration.

Known as the academic home of so many of South Africa’s liberation figures, Fort Hare’s contribution to our democratic society cannot be understated.

This centenary is a monumental moment in the institution’s history which calls for reflection and requires all parties and stakeholders on the campus to re-evaluate priorities.

Fort Hare’s campus is at a crossroad and decisive leadership is needed to keep it on a prosperous path. Recent demand and a decline in student funding rates has worryingly led to unprecedented protests and even the destruction of property.

Earlier this week the DA revealed that funding at Fort Hare had dried up and that as a result debt clearance and financial aid agreements had not been signed. We have also requested that the University’s management be summoned to Parliament to account for their financial mismanagement, but the ANC blocked our request.

We once again call on government – who are funding the centenary celebrations – to show leadership and postpone the planned celebrations until the funding crisis at the University has been resolved.

While this day deserves celebrating, it cannot be done while thousands of students literally starve.

The DA will in the meantime continue to champion student issues on campus, particularly funding.
