AfriForum Youth begins legal process regarding unfair dismissal of Puk SCC member

17 February 2023

AfriForum Youth today sent a lawyer’s letter to Dr. Sibusiso Chalufu,  the Executive Director of Student Life of the North-West University’s Potchefstroom Campus (Puk) to demand that Beàtha Groenewald be reinstated in her position as secretary of the student campus council (SCC), and that a public apology be issued for the wrongful removal from her position. If the Puk still fails to do so by 24 February, Afriforum Youth together with Beàtha Groenewald will approach the High Court on an urgent basis for an interdict against the NWU.

Groenewald took a stand against the racial exclusion that took place at the Puk’s welcoming function on 11 February, and she was removed from her position on the SCC shortly afterwards under suspicious circumstances.

“Beàtha Groenewald’s courage in the face of injustice is admired and therefore AfriForum Youth will support her and assist her with legal aid until her removal from the SCC is revoked, the Puk apologizes, and the truth comes out so that her reputation can be restored in full,” concludes René van der Vyver, spokesperson for AfriForum Youth.
