Lumka Yengeni thinks labour broking's evil - FF+

Anton Alberts accuses labour committee chairperson of prejudging issue

LABOUR BROKERS NOT A TOY IN THE HANDS OF ANC IDEOLOGY

"The ANC government is still on a wrong path with their intention to get rid of all labour brokers. The government has left its objectivity at the backdoor and is steamrolling ahead without considering the consequences for the labour market in particular and the South African economy in general," Adv. Anton Alberts, the Parliamentary spokesperson on Labour for the FF Plus says.

According to the ANC chairperson of the Labour Portfolio Committee in Parliament, Ms. Lumka Yengeni, the system of labour brokers is evil. She once again said this morning in the portfolio committee that she is of the opinion that this labour practice has to be scrapped. It is clear that she supports the complete eradication of all labour broking practices even before the debate on this issue has been completed.

"The FF Plus is of the opinion that labour brokers play an important role in the economy, but that there are quite a number of abusive practices which exist and can no longer be tolerated. The contributions labour brokers make however differs from one industry to another. That is why it could be possible that these brokers should be prohibited in certain industries where exploitation is endemic and it can not be removed without an absolute banning of these brokers. In such a case drastic action would be justified with the understanding that structures are put in place to prevent further exploitation. Both employee's and employer's rights have to be protected in a balanced way. Where banning brokers are not the appropriate way to manage the issue, reform and regulations should be considered," Adv. Alberts said.

"This is an extremely complex issue which cannot be addressed by sweeping statements. The ANC chairperson of the portfolio committee should approach this issue objectively and not ideologically. The ANC should rather leave this issue in the hands of an independent committee on inquiry which could with sensible proposals bring us closer to a fair solution," Adv. Alberts added.
