Malema and Ndlozi in court for assault after continuous pressure by AfriForum

Julius Malema, Leader of the EFF, and Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, EFF Spokesperson, today appeared in the Randburg Magistrates Court on charges of assault after continuous pressure by AfriForum. Malema and Ndlozi are being prosecuted for the alleged assault of an SAPS colonel. The trial date has been set for 10 March 2020. The case will proceed in court 14 at 8:30.

This follows after AfriForum announced in July 2019 that the organisation will approach the court with a mandamus application to force the NPA to make a decision regarding the prosecution of Malema as far as this case is concerned. The NPA announced in September 2019 that they will indeed be prosecuting Malema for the alleged assault. 

Malema and Ndlozi allegedly assaulted a senior policeman in uniform in April 2018 during an incident that was recorded on closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras. The senior policeman laid a charge with the police, but the case didn’t receive any police attention until AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit made some enquiries about the investigation in January 2019.

According to Kallie Kriel, CEO of AfriForum, the prosecution of Malema on this charge is not only a victory for AfriForum, but for everyone who believes in the principle of equality before the law. “Nobody is above the law and AfriForum welcomes the fact that Malema finally got his day in court. Malema thought that he was beyond reproach, but thanks to the pressure that AfriForum applied on the NPA, he will finally be held accountable.” 

Thanks to continuous pressure by AfriForum on the NPA, Malema will also appear in court in Mdantsane on 27 November 2019 after he fired off shots at the EFF’s five-year festivities in the Eastern Cape.
