Motor industry shopstewards to consult members on latest offer - NUMSA

Union says special NEC meeting will convene tomorrow, but for now strike continues

NUMSA STATEMENT ON THE OUTCOMES OF THE MOTOR NATIONAL SHOPSTEWARDS COUNCIL

October 1, 2013

The National Office Bearers (NOBs') of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) convened a meeting of our Motor National Shopstewards Council,  yesterday  September 30, 2013, at the Southern Sun Hotel, OR Tambo International Airport. The purpose of the meeting was to provide Numsa Shopstewards, representing the striking Numsa members in the motor industry, with feedback of the interactions between the NOBs' and the Retail Motor Industry (RMI) employers which happened over the weekend of September 27, 2013.

Numsa Shopstewards in this meeting appreciated the efforts of the NOBs' to secure double digit wage increases and other conditions of employment such as the banning of labour brokers, removal of the peace clause, establishment of a short time workers funds, transport allowance, etc.

The employers made a formal and written revised offer on wages, threshold, short time, labour brokers, equal pay for equal work and implementation date of the wage increase.  The wage offer was presented to the Numsa Motor National Shopstewards Council for consideration by our members.

Shopstewards shall now report on the employers' offer to striking Numsa members and provide mandate from workers to the Special National Executive Committee (NEC) scheduled for tomorrow Wednesday October 2, 2013.

Until the Numsa Special NEC takes a final decision on the continuation or settlement of the industry, we are advising that the strike continues.
